🦠 What is H3N2?
H3N2 is a subtype of the Influenza A virus, known to cause seasonal flu epidemics. It is one of the most mutating and severe strains, often associated with higher hospitalization rates, especially among children and the elderly.
While related to regular flu viruses, H3N2 can sometimes lead to intense symptoms and secondary infections like pneumonia or bronchitis.
📡 Why Is H3N2 in the News?
In early 2024, India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported a sudden surge in H3N2 cases, particularly in West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. Hospitals were urged to remain on alert as schools and offices saw increased absenteeism due to flu-like symptoms.
🩺 Symptoms of H3N2 Infection
Symptom | Severity & Duration |
High-grade fever | Often lasting 3–5 days |
Persistent cough | Can continue for 1–2 weeks |
Shortness of breath | May occur in high-risk patients |
Wheezing or chest pain | Indicates possible lung involvement |
Nasal congestion | With sneezing and runny nose |
Sore throat | Usually appears with fever onset |
General weakness | Can be profound and lingering |
🧬 How H3N2 Spreads
Through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing
Contact with contaminated surfaces or hands
Close contact in crowded or poorly ventilated areas
H3N2 is highly contagious and may spread faster during weather transitions, especially from winter to spring and during monsoon months.
🛡️ SKNH’s Prevention Guidelines
Annual flu vaccination (includes H3N2 coverage)
Mask usage in public areas during outbreaks
Avoid touching the face, especially nose and mouth
Frequent handwashing with soap or sanitizer
Stay home if symptomatic to prevent spreading
